If you own or have managed a screen printing business it's likely that you have had the task of hiring employees. When job openings become available, a common problem is finding qualified workers. In the 12 years that I owned and operated a screen printing business, hiring workers who were competent and knowledgeable was often difficult.
Many of the people that I interviewed for job openings claimed to have screen printing experience but had some of the craziest ideas on how they thought things are done in a screen printing shop. For example, some job candidates thought that the proper way to clean screens was to use mineral spirits (or even gasoline). Others thought the best way to reclaim screens was to use bleach. Some thought it was O.K. to cure a print using a heat gun (or in an oven)!
These are just a few examples that demonstrated to me the lack of understanding of the correct standards and practices for working in a screen printing shop. These bad practices were learned by working in print shops where there was a lack of proper training. Because of the problem that I had finding qualified workers, I realized that a need existed for a creating a standards based set of skills for working in screen printing. Thus, the idea of screen printer certification was born.
The ASPA Certified Screen Printer (CSP) exam was created to cover basic screen printing practices and procedures with which every screen printer should be familiar, i.e.: general screen printing, graphics/art fundamentals, textile (apparel) and non-textile screen printing techniques. Passing the exam requires a thorough knowledge of screen printing techniques and procedures and covers the important aspects of the screen printing process. ASPA's Certification program is a proven success having had the participation of thousands of printers worldwide. Individuals, schools, and screen printing businesses use our program on a regular basis.
Screen printing is not different than other trades (e.g. welding, auto mechanics, carpentry, etc.) in that knowing the fundamentals and understanding of the proper way to do things is essential. Certification helps to create qualified workers and that is a benefit to both employers and prospective employees.
